It was proving to be a night full of surprises. First, Keith shows me his car. I could tell it had been a hard decision, too. He’d been expecting a Katie type of reaction but in no way, shape, form, or fashion was I like Katie, and I suspected he was finally realizing it. He confirmed it when he shared Nessa and Hal’s story with me—especially Nessa’s part. It showed he trusted me, whether he realized it or not. I was determined I wouldn’t betray his trust either. I did the only thing I could think to do. I reached over and squeezed his hand, assuring him, “I won’t say anything. If it comes up, I’ll act like it’s the first I’ve heard of it.”

His eyes took on a glassy shine, “Thanks.”

“Don’t mention it.”

He leaned in closer and I thought for sure he was going to kiss me. I let my eyes start to drift closed and…

Tap. Tap. Tap.

“Y’all ready to go in?” Katie and Johnny were standing beside Keith’s door. The moment was ruined.

He sighed, “Let’s go.”

Damn it, Katie. After I exited the car I shot her a venomous look. She bit her lip and lowered her eyes.

“Sorry.”

“Uh huh,” I passed her up and walked up to the front door beside Keith. So nervous it felt like butterflies filled my whole body, I grabbed his arm and linked mine around it, squeezing his bicep against my chest. His ears flushed cherry red and I grinned. I leaned in closer, “Want me to let go?”

He shook his head and returned my smile, “Don’t you dare.”

The door swung open and a grinning Nessa leaned back, looking over her shoulder, and shouted, “I told you I heard something. They’re here.” She opened it wider, sharing her smile with me, “Long time no see, stranger. Come in and join the party.”

I tried not to stare at her baby bump as we stepped through the door. I nodded, striving to keep my eyes above shoulder level, “Good to see you again.”

“You, too—and you brought Katie. Hey, girl, I want you to know I’m still mad at you.”

“Hey, yourself. Why you mad at me? What did I do?”

“You followed Lorna to that damned school.” She jammed her fists on her hips. “She had to go. Her daddy gave her no choice. What’s your excuse, though?”

“Besties stick together through thick and thin.” She pointed at Nessa’s midsection, changing the subject, “What’s that? Did you swallow a watermelon seed?”

“Nope.” Nessa shook her head, blushing. “This is what happens when you don’t swallow.”

“Haha, I see what you did, there. When’s the big day?”

She rubbed her belly, “Doc says it’s looking like we may have a Thanksgiving Day baby. I can’t wait. I feel as big as a house.”

“It’s all baby. You’ll be back in your skinny jeans in no time.”

She cackled as she led the way through the house and into the backyard. “Skinny jeans… yeah, right. When have I ever been that size?”

“High school.”

Her peekaboo-rainbow-streaked auburn hair swished from side to side as she disagreed, “Not even then.
